Hardware Recommendations

Choose the right device for Bristol Maps on the water. Whether you prefer iPad, Android, or a rugged purpose-built tablet, we have you covered.

Devices

Bristol Maps runs on iOS and Android. Here are our top recommendations for getting the best experience on the water.

Top Pick iPad with Bristol Maps

iPad (Cellular Model)

Our primary recommendation for most fishermen. The iPad delivers a large, high-quality display with a familiar interface. The cellular model is essential because it includes a built-in GPS receiver.

RecommendediPad Air Gen 4 or newer (2020+)
Model TypeCellular (not WiFi-only)

Budget OptionRefurbished iPads work great
Brightness Tip — iPad Pro

Standard iPads top out around 500–600 nits, which can be hard to read in direct sunlight. If brightness matters, consider an iPad Pro:

  • iPad Pro M4 (2024) — 1,000 nits SDR / 1,600 nits HDR on both the 11" and 13" models (tandem OLED display)
  • iPad Pro 12.9" (2021 & 2022, M1/M2) — 1,000 nits full-screen / 1,600 nits peak (mini-LED, 12.9" model only; the 11" versions of these generations max out at 600 nits)

At 1,000 nits, the iPad Pro is significantly more readable in sunlight than standard iPads, though still below the 2,600 nits offered by rugged tablets.

Advantages
  • Large, high-resolution display
  • Familiar interface most users know
  • Built-in GPS on cellular models
  • iPad Pro models reach 1,000 nits for outdoor use
  • Wide accessory ecosystem
  • Reliable and well-supported
Considerations
  • Standard iPads (non-Pro) can struggle in direct sunlight (~500–600 nits)
  • Needs case or enclosure for weather protection
  • WiFi-only models lack GPS
Best for Outdoors Hugerock X70 rugged tablet

Rugged Android Tablets

Purpose-built for harsh outdoor conditions. The Hugerock X70 and X72 feature an ultra-bright 2,600-nit display that is easily readable in direct sunlight — even on the brightest days.

ModelsHugerock X70 (7") / X72 (larger)
Brightness2,600 nits (vs ~600 on iPads)
Power12V input from boat electrical
DurabilityIP-rated, drop resistant
Advantages
  • 2,600-nit sunlight-readable display
  • 12V power from boat electrical system
  • Works with gloves on
  • Rugged, waterproof, drop-proof
  • No extra case or enclosure needed
Considerations
  • Smaller screen (7" on X70)
  • Android may be less familiar to some
WiFi-Only iPads: WiFi-only iPads do not have a built-in GPS receiver. On the water without cell towers, they cannot reliably determine your location. If you already own a WiFi-only iPad, see the External GPS section below. For new purchases, always choose the cellular model (no cell plan required).
Starlink as a GPS Source Step 1 (Starlink App): Tap ☰ menu → ⓘ info icon → Debug Data → scroll to Starlink Location → toggle on "Allow access on local network".

Step 2 (Bristol Maps): Settings → Starlink GPS → toggle on "Use Starlink for GPS Location". Device must be on Starlink WiFi.

If you have Starlink on your vessel, Bristol Maps can use the Starlink router as a GPS source for any device connected to its network — including WiFi-only iPads and laptops. This is a great option if you already have Starlink installed. Note: Starlink provides position data only and does not provide compass heading. Your heading on the map will be derived from movement (course over ground) rather than a magnetic compass, so it may not update when stationary or moving slowly.

External GPS Receivers

If you already own a WiFi-only iPad and don't want to replace it, an external GPS receiver is a solid workaround to get another season out of your current device.

Dual XGPS150A

Our recommended external GPS receiver. Connects wirelessly to your iPad over Bluetooth. Place it near a window, power it from any USB port, and your iPad will receive accurate GPS coordinates.

ConnectionBluetooth (wireless)
PowerUSB powered
PlacementNear a window for best signal
CompatibleiPad, iPhone (WiFi models)
Note: Occasionally the iPad may lose the GPS connection. Toggling Location Services off and on in Settings usually resolves this. For a permanent, hassle-free solution, we recommend upgrading to a cellular iPad.
