Engine Gauges & History

If your engine is on the NMEA 2000 network, Bristol Maps can show live gauges and keep a record you can look back through. Useful for spotting a temperature creeping up over a season, or working out what your fuel burn actually is.

Beta feature -- turn Beta Options on first

The Engine Gauges and Engine History buttons are hidden unless Beta Options is enabled. Go to Settings > Advanced & Development and turn on Beta Options Enabled. The buttons then appear on the Tools tab, next to Documents and NMEA Switches.

Beta features may be unstable -- use with care.

Getting engine data in

Engine data comes off the NMEA 2000 bus through your gateway or the N2K Bridge. Nothing to configure on the engine side.

Two related switches live in Settings > NMEA & Instruments under Map Overlays:

Setting Description
Show Engine Overlay Show engine telemetry (RPM, temperature, alarms) on the map
Log Engine Data Record engine telemetry history for viewing on the Engine History page

Log Engine Data has to be on for the history charts to have anything to draw.

Tip

Tapping the engine overlay on the map opens the Engine Gauges page directly.

Engine Gauges

The gauges page shows one panel per engine. Each panel has a dot that goes green when that engine is reporting, the engine's name, and its connection status.

If you have more than one engine, a row of chips across the top lets you show and hide individual engines.

The gauges

New panels start with these eight: RPM, Coolant Temp, Oil Pressure, Voltage, Fuel Rate, Engine Hours, Gear, and Alarms.

Rearranging the gauges

Tap Edit at the bottom of the page. In edit mode:

  • Each gauge grows a drag handle and an ✕ to remove it.
  • Drag a gauge onto another to reorder it.
  • ＋ Add in a panel's header opens an Add Gauge list of everything not already shown. If they're all shown, it tells you so.
  • A Metric / Imperial button appears -- tap it to switch units for the whole page.

Tap Done when you're finished. Your layout is saved per engine.

Alarms

When an engine reports an alarm, a red badge appears in that engine's panel header and the active alarms are listed underneath it. Individual gauges also turn red when their value is in alarm -- coolant temperature over 212 °F (100 °C), for example.

Engine History

The history page draws trend charts from your recorded engine data.

At the top you pick a date range with From and To, choose an Engine if you have more than one, and tap Load.

The charts, in order:

  • Fuel Burned per Day -- a bar per day, with a total above it
  • RPM
  • Coolant Temperature
  • Exhaust Temperature
  • Oil Pressure
  • Fuel Rate
  • Alternator Voltage
  • Engine Load

Charts zoom on the time axis -- pinch horizontally to look at a shorter window.

Alarm History

Below the charts, Alarm History lists every alarm recorded in the date range with its time and which engine it came from. If there weren't any, it says "No alarms recorded in this range."

History only goes back as far as logging

Charts and alarm history are built from data recorded while Log Engine Data was switched on. Turning it on today doesn't fill in last season.
