Sync & Sharing

Three different things, kept apart on purpose:

  • Cloud backup keeps your own devices in step -- phone, tablet and desktop all show the same gear.
  • Group sharing gives your fleet group a read-only copy of a string that updates as you work it.
  • Dragger sharing lets drag boats see where your pots are for a set time, so they can steer clear.

Cloud backup and sync

Cloud Pot & String Backup (Settings > Pot & Gear Tracking > Cloud Sync) is on by default. With it on, and the app signed in, everything about your gear is backed up to your account and pushed to every device signed in as you:

  • pots, with their names, positions, set times, depths, buoy numbers, gear types and icons
  • strings, with their colours, gear types, icons, notes and tags
  • string tracks, including runs recorded by two devices on the same string

Changes arrive on your other devices within seconds when you have signal. Made offline, they queue and catch up when the connection returns. Editing a pot or moving it on the chart uploads straight away rather than waiting for the next sync pass.

Pick counts travel separately: a pick is a log entry, so it syncs with your logs under Cloud Log Backup in Logging & Recording. See Picks in the log.

The Details card on a pot's page shows its sync state: "Synced Sep 8, 06:12", or "Not yet synced to the cloud." while an upload is pending.

The string name is the key

Within one account a string is identified by its name. Create "Main" on the phone and "Main" on the tablet before they have synced and they merge into a single string with all the pots from both. That is expected; it is how two devices on the same boat end up with one set of gear.

Sharing a string with your group

Members of a group can be given a copy of a string. Sharing is done from the string itself:

  1. Open the string (Gear Management > ✏️).
  2. Tap Share with Group.
  3. Pick the group.
  4. The app confirms: "'Deep Edge' shared with Team Nush. Members will see your pots and string track."

The same option is on the older map sheet as Share String with Group. If you have no groups, or the string is already shared with all of them, the app says so.

What members see

A read-only copy of the string that keeps up with you: pots you add, move, rename, recolour or delete reach them within about ten seconds. The string page, the pot pages and the track pages carry the banner "Shared with you — read-only. Manage it from the string owner's device.", and the pots' callouts on the chart add "(Shared gear)".

What members can and cannot do

  • They can Center on Map, open the string, pot and track pages, and see everything you see.
  • They cannot start a pick, edit or move a pot, change the colour, or delete anything.
  • They can Hide Shared String to take it off their own device. The app explains: "It stays hidden until the owner stops sharing or deletes it."
  • Leaving the group removes that group's shared strings from their device. If you delete or unshare a string, it disappears from every member.

Stopping

Open the string and tap Manage Sharing. It lists every group the string is shared with as "Stop sharing: Team Nush"; pick one, and the app confirms the string "is no longer shared" with that group.

Sharing is one-way

A member's copy is for looking at. If two boats work the same gear and both need to drop, move and pick, sign both devices in to the same account and let cloud backup keep them in step instead.

Sharing pot locations with drag boats

Under Settings > Pot & Gear Tracking > Share with Drag Boats:

  • Share Pot Locations with Draggers -- "Dragger accounts will be able to see your pot and string locations until this expires, so drag boats can steer clear of your gear. Requires pot & string cloud backup."
  • Share For appears once sharing is on: 24 hours, 7 days (the default), 30 days, End of season (Dec 31) or Until I turn it off.

A status line under the switch shows where you stand: "Sharing pot locations until Sep 19, 2026 6:12 PM." or "Sharing pot locations until you turn it off." Sharing is registered with your account, so the app needs a connection to change it; if that fails it reverts and says "Could not update pot location sharing. Please check your internet connection and try again."

Give it a stop date

Pick a duration rather than Until I turn it off, the same as with processor sharing. When the pots come up, the share expires by itself.

On the desktop app

Settings > Pots & Gear > Cloud Sync has the switch "Back up pots & strings to your account (sync across devices)", a status line such as "All gear synced · last download 9/8/2026 6:12 AM" or "3 items pending upload", and a Sync Now button. In the Gear Management window, the Group Sharing line under String Details has Share with Group… and Stop Sharing…; each prints your groups and asks you to type the group's name. A string shared to you shows "Shared with you by a group member (read-only)" there, and on the chart its pots offer Hide Shared String on right-click. Share with Drag Boats works exactly as on mobile.
