Convert a Track to a Route

Turn a path you have already run into a saved route. Useful for a channel you picked your way through once and want to follow again, or a run you want to hand to another boat.

Opening It

On the navigation page, open the settings menu, expand Track Lines, and tap Convert Track to Route….

The page that opens is titled Convert Track to Route. It has a live map preview at the top and the controls below, so what you see on the map is exactly what Save Route will create.

Route Name

The name is pre-filled from the time range -- for example Route Mar 4 08:15 - 14:20. Change it to something you will recognise. Save Route stays disabled until there is a name and at least two points.

Time Range

The range defaults to the last 24 hours.

Four quick buttons set it for you: 1h, 6h, 12h, 24h. Each sets the range to that many hours back from now.

For anything else, set From and To with the date and time pickers.

Two warnings appear under the pickers when they apply:

Track history older than 30 days is removed

If you set the From date more than 30 days back, an orange warning tells you which date the data runs out at. There will be nothing to convert before that point. Track history is kept at full detail for a day, per-minute for a week, per-10-minutes for a month, then deleted.

Ranges can span more than one recording session

If your range covers several separate recording sessions, a warning tells you how many, and that they will be joined into one route. That is usually not what you want -- if you stopped and restarted recording, the route will draw a straight line across the gap. Tighten the range.

Gear-string track points are excluded automatically. They share the same storage as vessel tracks but are never stitched into a route.

Point Sampling

A recorded track has far more points than a route needs. Two sliders control how many are kept, and they stay in step with each other -- move one and the other follows.

Control Description
Keep every The stride. At 1 it reads point (all points); above that it reads point (every nth). Range is 1 to 50
Total points to keep Set a target total instead, and the app works out the stride. Range is 10 to 1000

Under the sliders, a running count: n of m points will be saved.

The last point of the range is always kept, whatever the stride, so the route reaches your actual final position.

Fewer points is usually better

A route with a point every second is unwieldy to edit and clutters the map. Thin it until the preview line still traces the channel you actually ran, and no further.

Saving

Tap Save Route. You get a confirmation -- Saved "name" with n points. -- and the modal closes. The new route is saved with:

  • Your chosen name
  • A description recording how many track points it came from and the time range used
  • Load on map turned on, so it appears immediately

The route syncs to your account like any other route, so it turns up on your other devices.

If fewer than two points are in the preview, Save tells you to widen the time range or increase the points kept.

Cancel or Close exits without saving.
